Our Story: A Legacy of Love
Dear Cobbler Gobblers,
My Mama, Lucille Hinton, AKA “Big Mommy”, was an extraordinary homemaker in addition to working full-time outside the home. Each night, Sunday through Friday, our family of six could expect a freshly-cooked, hot meal for dinner. Saturdays, however, were “Go for Yourself” nights.
In addition to nightly dinners, Big Mommy assured holiday meals were special. She’d spend hours in our modest kitchen of a second-floor flat whipping up scrumptious, soulful meals that melted in your mouth. Turkey and dressing with homemade gravy, mac and cheese, mixed collards, mustard and turnip greens, grilled pork ribs, spaghetti with made-from-scratch meat sauce, potato salad, creamy cole slaw and homemade dinner rolls were on the menu. Whatever the season, we had the works, and Big Mommy sealed each meal with her famous apple pie, pound, lemon or German chocolate cake. Gallantly, she beat her cake recipes by hand (with a wooden spoon) since we didn’t own an electric mixer.
How I LOVED cheering on Big Mommy counting up to 150 beats as she combined flour, eggs, sugar, butter and spices in her sacred, white with red polka dots mixing bowl! Anyone using it did so under Big Momy’s supervision. The bowl’s girth and wear could withstand time after time the brutality inflicted upon it by repeatedly hand-pulsing clumpy ingredients into a silky-smooth batter.
Besides enjoying the goodness of the meals put before us, I relished the times spent serving as Big Mommy’s sous chef. Older now, I have taken her lessons with me into my own kitchen…the most valuable one being adding love to all that I make. That’s exactly how I prepare my homemade cobblers, initiated with plump, ripe fruit, fine, pure-cane sugar, creamy butter, fresh dairy, smooth chocolates and aromatic spices. My homemade doughs are prepared with sifted, unbleached flour, real butter and dairy, then hand-rolled, baked and leavened to perfection.
I launched “Fait Maison Cobblers and More by Felicia” in 2020, with plans of offering the best peach cobbler ever to my clients.
Today, what was intended as a peach cobbler hustle, is now a licensed enterprise offering eight flavors of fruit-filled goodness, quiche and comfort pies to individuals, organizations and festival goers.
I still have Big Mommy’s red and white, polka-dot mixing bowl, using it from time to time as I reminisce while preparing my cobblers and dough. It remains sturdy and sacred, as our mother/daughter, chef/sous chef relationship was. I don’t have to beat with the same determination as Big Mommy because I now own a fancy electric mixer. However, I do combine my ingredients with her same love and enthusiasm. Big Mommy’s mixing bowl and legacy challenge me to bake with my best foot forward. I produce with the love I have for my own family. In fact, Cobbler Gobblers, that’s exactly who you are.
